Tomahawk

To cut, strike, or kill, with a tomahawk.

Tomaley

The liver of the lobster, which becomes green when boiled; -- called also tomalline.

Toman

A money of account in Persia, whose value varies greatly at different times and places. Its average value may be reckoned at about two and a half dollars.

Tomato

The fruit of a plant of the Nightshade family (Lycopersicum esculentun); also, the plant itself. The fruit, which is called also love apple, is usually of a rounded, flattened form, but often irregular in shape. It is of a bright red or yellow color, and is eaten either cooked or uncooked.

Tomb

To place in a tomb; to bury; to inter; to entomb.

Tombac

An alloy of copper and zinc, resembling brass, and containing about 84 per cent of copper; -- called also German brass or Dutch brass. It is very malleable and ductile, and when beaten into thin leaves is sometimes called Dutch metal. The addition of arsenic makes white tombac.

Tomboy

A romping girl; a hoiden.

Tombstone

A stone or small stone monument erected over a grave, bearing the name of the dead person interred there, to preserve the memory of the deceased.

Tomcat

A male cat, especially when full grown or of large size.

Tomcod

A small edible American fish (Microgadus tomcod) of the Codfish family, very abundant in autumn on the Atlantic coast of the Northen United States; -- called also frostfish. See Illust. under Frostfish. The kingfish. See Kingfish (a). The jack. See 2d Jack, 8. (c).

Tome

As many writings as are bound in a volume, forming part of a larger work; a book; -- usually applied to a ponderous volume.

Tomentose

Covered with matted woolly hairs; as, a tomentose leaf; a tomentose leaf; a tomentose membrane.

Tomentum

The closely matted hair or downy nap covering the leaves or stems of some plants.

Tomfoolery

Trifling or silly behavior done mostly for amusement; foolishness; fooling around.

Tomium

The cutting edge of the bill of a bird.

Tomjohn

A kind of open sedan used in Ceylon, carried by a single pole on men's shoulders.

Tommy

Bread, -- generally a penny roll; the supply of food carried by workmen as their daily allowance.

Tommy Atkins

Any white regular soldier of the British army; also, such soldiers collectively; -- said to be fictitious name inserted in the models given to soldiers to guide them in filling out account blanks, etc.

Tomopteris

A genus of transparent marine annelids which swim actively at the surface of the sea. They have deeply divided or forked finlike organs (parapodia). This genus is the type of the order, or suborder, Gymnocopa.

Tomorrow

The day after the present; the morrow.

Tompion

A stopper of a cannon or a musket. See Tampion.

Tompon

An inking pad used in lithographic printing.

Tomrig

A rude, wild, wanton girl; a hoiden; a tomboy.

Tomtate

A Florida and West Indian grunt (Bathystoma rimator or Haemulon rimator); also, any of various allied species.

Tomtit

A titmouse, especially the blue titmouse. The wren.

Ton

A measure of weight or quantity.

Tonality

The principle of key in music; the character which a composition has by virtue of the key in which it is written, or through the family relationship of all its tones and chords to the keynote, or tonic, of the whole.

Tone

To utter with an affected tone.

Toned

Having (such) a tone; -- chiefly used in composition; as, high-toned; sweet-toned.

Tong

In China, an association, secret society, or organization of any kind; in the United States, usually, a secret association of Chinese such as that of the highbinders; in the U. S. the tongs have been frequently associated with criminal activity and gang warfare.

Tonga

A kind of light two-wheeled vehicle, usually for four persons, drawn by ponies or bullocks.

Tongkang

A kind of boat or junk used in the seas of the Malay Archipelago.

Tongo

The mangrove; -- so called in the Pacific Islands.

Tongs

An instrument, usually of metal, consisting of two parts, or long shafts, jointed together at or near one end, or united by an elastic bow, used for handling things, especially hot coals or metals; -- often called a pair of tongs.

Tongue-shaped

Shaped like a tongue; specifically (Bot.), linear or oblong, and fleshy, blunt at the end, and convex beneath; as, a tongue-shaped leaf.

Tongue-tie

To deprive of speech or the power of speech, or of distinct articulation.

Tongue-tied

Destitute of the power of distinct articulation; having an impediment in the speech, esp. when caused by a short fraenum.

Tonguefish

A flounder (Symphurus plagiusa) native of the southern coast of the United States.

Tonguester

One who uses his tongue; a talker; a story-teller; a gossip.

Tonguing

Modification of tone for a rapid staccato effect by the performer's tongue, in playing a wind instrument, as a flute. In single tonguing only one kind of stroke is used, the tongue articulating a rapid /t;/ in double tonguing, two strokes, as for /t/ and /k,/ are alternated; in triple tonguing, /t, k, t,/ etc.

Tonguy

Ready or voluble in speaking; as, a tonguy speaker.

Tonic

A tonic element or letter; a vowel or a diphthong.

Tonicity

The state of healthy tension or partial contraction of muscle fibers while at rest; tone; tonus.

Tonight

The present or the coming night; the night after the present day.

Tonite

An explosive compound; a preparation of gun cotton.

Tonneau

In France, a light-wheeled vehicle with square or rounded body and rear entrance.

Tonnihood

The female of the bullfinch; -- called also tonyhoop.

Tonnish

In the ton; fashionable; modish.

Tonometer

An instrument for determining the rate of vibrations in tones.

Tonometry

The act of measuring with a tonometer; measurement of tension, esp. the tension of the eyeball.

Tonophant

A modification of the kaleidophon, for showing composition of acoustic vibrations. It consists of two thin slips of steel welded together, their length being adjustable by a screw socket.

Tonous

Abounding in tone or sound.

Tonsil

One of the two glandular organs situated in the throat at the sides of the fauces. The tonsils are sometimes called the almonds, from their shape.

Tonsilar

Of or pertaining to the tonsils; tonsilitic.

Tonsillectomy

The operation of removing the tonsils; -- formerly also called tonsilotomy.

Tonsillitis

Inflammation of the tonsils; --- same as tonsilitis.

Tonsilotomy

The operation of removing the tonsils, or a portion thereof; -- called more commonly tonsillectomy.

Tonsorial

Of or pertaining to a barber, or shaving.

Tonsure

The act of clipping the hair, or of shaving the crown of the head; also, the state of being shorn.

Tonsured

Having the tonsure; shaven; shorn; clipped; hence, bald.

Tontine

An annuity, with the benefit of survivorship, or a loan raised on life annuities with the benefit of survivorship. Thus, an annuity is shared among a number, on the principle that the share of each, at his death, is enjoyed by the survivors, until at last the whole goes to the last survivor, or to the last two or three, according to the terms on which the money is advanced. Used also adjectively; as, tontine insurance.

Tonus

Tonicity, or tone; as, muscular tonus.

Tool

To travel in a vehicle; to ride or drive.

Tool-rest

the part that supports a tool-post or a tool.

Toon

The reddish brown wood of an East Indian tree (Cedrela Toona) closely resembling the Spanish cedar; also. the tree itself.

Toot

To cause to sound, as a horn, the note being modified at the beginning and end as if by pronouncing the letter t; to blow; to sound.

Tooter

One who toots; one who plays upon a pipe or horn.

Tooth

To furnish with teeth.

Toothache

Pain in a tooth or in the teeth; odontalgia.

Toothbill

A peculiar fruit-eating ground pigeon (Didunculus strigiostris) native of the Samoan Islands, and noted for its resemblance, in several characteristics, to the extinct dodo. Its beak is stout and strongly hooked, and the mandible has two or three strong teeth toward the end. Its color is chocolate red. Called also toothbilled pigeon, and manu-mea.

Toothdrawer

One whose business it is to extract teeth with instruments; a dentist.

Toothed

Having teeth; furnished with teeth.

Toothing

The act or process of indenting or furnishing with teeth.

Toothlet

A little tooth, or like projection.

Toothleted

Having a toothlet or toothlets; as, a toothleted leaf.

Toothpick

A pointed instrument for clearing the teeth of substances lodged between them.

Toothshell

Any species of Dentalium and allied genera having a tooth-shaped shell. See Dentalium.

Toothwort

A plant whose roots are fancied to resemble teeth, as certain plants of the genus Lathraea, and various species of Dentaria. See Coralwort.

Tootle

To toot gently, repeatedly, or continuously, on a wind instrument, as a flute; also, to make a similar noise by any means.

Top

To cover on the top; to tip; to cap; -- chiefly used in the past participle.

Top billing

the most prominent place in an advertisement or program for a theatrical performance, movie, fundraising affair, etc.; the place where the star's name usually is located.

Top secret

containing information whose disclosure could result in grave danger to the national security; -- the highest of the three commonly known levels of national security classification, the others being confidential and secret.
